Rudrama Devi of the Kakatiya Dynasty was the first woman to rule a kingdom in all of South India. Her father, having no male heir, raised her as a prince — training her in swordfighting, military strategy, and governance. She ascended the throne in 1262 CE and ruled for 27 years, defeating invasions from the north, south and west. She adopted a male name and male title — Rudradeva — not out of shame, but out of strategy. She lived in two identities simultaneously and mastered both completely.
